Softball Falls in First Two Games of Charger Chillout

In their first action of 2015, the Maryville softball team dropped both games to open the Charger Chillout tournament in Decatur, Ala. The Saints were edged 9-8 by Southern Arkansas in their first game Friday then had Delta State comeback for a 5-2 win. Maryville plays host Alabama-Huntsville and Kentucky Wesleyan on day two of the tourney Saturday.

In the opener, the Saints fell behind 4-0 and 6-1 before rallying to set up a dramatic seventh inning. Nicole Taylor had an RBI grounder in the third to start the comeback. Maryville added two more runs in the top of the sixth. Meredith Brown's infield single plated another run, and Angie Ochoa's hit pulled the Saints to within 6-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Saints surged ahead with a four-run outburst. Taylor singled, and Alex Flasch followed with another hit. Courtney Ferguson's RBI single to right drew Maryville to 6-5. Wendy Macias drilled a three-run homer to right center as the Saints took an 8-6 lead to the bottom of the seventh. Maryville retired the first two batters of the inning, and were one strike away from the win, until Leigha Doyle reached on a double. Courtney Hudgins singled to left to put two runners aboard. Brooke Goad then capped the rally with a 3-run homer to center as the Saints lost a heartbreaker.

The Saints took a 1-0 lead over Delta State with a single tally in the top of the third. Casey Ward doubled to left to start the game, and Ashley Marks' RBI single drove in the game's first run. Delta State answered with two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take the lead. Maryville got a run back in the top of the sixth. Taylor singled with one out to start the rally, and Flasch laced a double to left center as the Saints cut the gap to three. However, the Saints stranded her there.  In their last at-bat, the Saints were unable to mount a rally and went down in order.
