Freshman Saikou Jallow sank the eventual game-winning basket with 38 seconds remaining in overtime to boost the No. 11-seeded Maryville men's basketball team to a thrilling 72-71 victory at #6 seed Southern Indiana Sunday in Evansville, Ind. The Saints have advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday, March 5, at Family Arena against top-seed Bellarmine at time to be determined.

The Saints started quickly by hitting four early 3-pointers in building a 20-8 lead nine minutes into the game. Maryville kept a double-digit lead and eventually led 27-14 after a Max Mischkulnig 3-pointer with 7:27 left in the first half. The Saints settled for a 38-26 lead at intermission.

The Saints still held a 12-point advantage before the Screaming Eagles mounted a rally. Eight straight USI points eventually led to the home team tying the game at 43-43. USI finally took its first lead at the 12:24 mark with a 47-46 edge. The Saints scored five straight points to grab a 54-49 margin. USI answered and retook the lead at 60-59 with 2:29 to play in the second half.

Armon Provo drilled a 3-pointer for a 62-60 lead but TeNale Roland made two free throws to tie the game. The Saints missed and Gavin Schumann's free throw pushed USI ahead 63-62 with 33 ticks to play. Provo was fouled and stepped up to the line and knocked two free throws for a 64-63 lead. USI's Roland rattled home a triple for a 66-64 lead with nine seconds to play. With 2.2 seconds to play, Damyan Stoyanov rebounded a missed shot and his layup forced overtime at 66-all.

USI grabbed a 69-68 lead but Josh Montague drained two free throws for a 70-69 advantage with 3:31 remaining. Neither team scored for almost three minutes until Roland again came up big for USI and a 71-70 lead with 47 seconds remaining in the extra session. On Maryville's next possession, Jallow scored on a layup for the final points of the game but not the end of the drama. The Saints were leading 72-71 and their defense forced a USI miss. However, the Saints misfired twice at the line with 23 seconds remaining. The Screaming Eagles were unable to find the range from deep, but again the Saints missed twice at the line with three seconds left.  However, Stoyanov came up with the game-clinching steal to preserve the one-point victory.

Provo finished with 18 points to pace the Saints, while Pemberton and Mischkulnig both finished with 15 points apiece. As a team, Maryville shot 50 percent from the field (28-of-56) while holding Southern Indiana (19-8) to just a .375 mark. The Saints hit 10 3-pointers in the contest.

The Saints improve to 12-16 overall and post their first victory over Southern Indiana in nine tries.
