The Maryville softball team lost a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference games to Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon in contests that were played at Lindenwood University. The Prairie Stars took game one 5-2 and closed the doubleheader with an 11-3 decision.
In the first game, UIS scored an unearned run in the first and extended the margin with three runs in the third. After the visitors scored their fifth run, the Saints answered with single tallies. Nicole Taylor lashed a single to right to bring home Alex Flash with the first run for the Saints in the fifth. In the sixth, Heather Wernle was a pinch runner and sprinted home on Ashley Marks' triple to left center. However, the Saints were unable to pull the final three runs back.
In game two, the visitors hung crooked numbers in the third and fourth innings to pull away from the Saints. UIS batted around and scored seven runs in the third inning. The Saints got on the board in the fourth when Sheridon Sprague singled to center to bring home Marks but had a runner thrown out at the plate. In the fifth, Danielle Williams singled to left as Taylor scored, and Marks had an infield hit as Meredith Brown touched home. UIS closed out the scoring with a run in the seventh.
