Saints Pound Five Homers to Sweep DH at UW-Parkside

Maryville blasted five homers to power to a sweep of a Great Lakes Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday in Kenosha, Wis. The Saints won both games by matching 7-2 final scores.

In game one, the Saints cranked three home runs in the top of the third to take command. Wendy Macias started the frame with a solo blast. Krystal Rock launched a two-run blast, and after a Danielle Williams walk, Ashley Marks sent a blast over the wall in left for a 5-0 lead. With the bases loaded in the fifth, Angie Ochoa walked to force in a run, and Macias' RBI grounder pushed the Saints up by seven. Macias allowed just one hit to the Rangers through five innings before UWP tallied two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

In the nightcap, Darby Ferguson started a second-inning outburst with a double, and Meredith Brown followed for a 1-0 Saints lead. A UWP error allowed Brown to score for a 2-0 edge. Rock pounded out another two-run homer as the Saints surged to a four-run advantage. The Rangers got on the board with a tally in the fourth but the Saints answered in the fifth. Marks walks, stole second and scored on Alex Flasch's RBI single. The Saints sealed the win in the sixth. Heather Wernle scored on a UWP error, and Rock's sac fly scored Taylor with the game's final run. Taylor picked up the win as she held UWP to just three hits.

The Saints improve to 6-13 on the season and are 3-3 in the league. The Rangers are 4-15 overall, 0-6 in the GLVC. Maryville is back on the diamond as they travel to face Lewis.
