Saints Drop Both Ends of Doubleheader at William Jewell

The Maryville scored three runs in both games of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at William Jewell as the Cardinals swept a doubleheader Saturday in Liberty, Mo. WJC held off a late rush by the Saints 4-3 in game one and eased to a 7-3 decision in the finale.

The Cardinals got a solo homer in the bottom of the first and added two runs in the home half of the fifth for a 3-0 lead. The Saints pulled one back in the top of the sixth. Danielle Williams singled and stole second. Two straight walks loaded the bases, and Alex Flasch skied a sac fly to bring Williams home to cut the Saints deficit to 3-1. WJC tacked on a pivotal run in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the game winner as Maryville nearly tied it in the top of the seventh. The Saints loaded the bases, and Williams' fielder's choice scored Heather Wernle. With runners still in scoring position, Wendy Macias had an RBI groundout that pulled the Saints to 4-3. However, they were unable to score the game-tying run as two runners were stranded in scoring position.

After scoring a run in the first, WJC cushioned its lead with five runs in the third. Maryville pushed across a run in the fourth inning when Nicole Taylor singled and swiped second. She later scored in Williams' single. In the sixth, Taylor tripled before Williams again plated her with an RBI single. The Saints added a late run in the seventh frame when Sheridon Sprague drilled a solo homer to close the scoring.

The Saints are now 7-17 overall, 4-6 in the GLVC. The Cardinals improve to 17-9 overall, 6-6 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday at Rockhurst.
