Sprague Drives in Four as Macias Shuts Out Lindenwood in Game One

Pitcher Wendy Macias shut out Lindenwood over six innings, and Sheridon Sprague drove in four runs as the Maryville softball team posted a 10-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader in St. Charles, Mo. The Lions came back to deny the Saints a sweep as Lindenwood rallied for a 7-6 win in the finale.

The Saints took advantage of three straight errors to score two runs as Nikki Taylor and Krystal Rock tallied in the first. Dani Williams singled to bring Sprague home for a 3-0 lead, all the offense Macias would need. The Saints tacked on a run in third when Sprague singled, stole second and scored on Williams' RBI double. Maryville took advantage of another Lindenwood error and tallied another score in the fifth. The Saints put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth with five runs, with Sprague's bases-loaded double clearing the bases as Maryville eventually won via run rule. Macias recorded seven strikeouts.

In the finale, after Lindenwood tallied two in the first, the Saints roared back with five runs in the top of the second. Williams started the outburst when she was hit by a pitch. Ashley Marks singled, and a sac bunt by Angie Ochoa put both runners in scoring position. Meredith Brown's single tied the game 2-2. After Alex Flasch walked, Taylor singled in a run. Rock then doubled home two more runs as the Saints stormed to a 5-2 lead. The Lions chipped away at the deficit then pushed ahead with two runs in the sixth for a 7-5 lead. The Saints pulled to within one when Taylor led off the top of the seventh with a walk and scored on Rock's double. However, the Saints were unable to bring home the game-tying run as the Lions held on for the win.

The Saints are 8-21, while the Lions move to 6-30. Maryville returns to conference play Friday as it heads to Quincy for a Noon twinbill.
