Saints Power Past Lincoln to Sweep Doubleheader

The Maryville softball team powered to a doubleheader sweep over visiting Lincoln Thursday afternoon in St. Louis. The Saints won a back-and-forth game one 7-3 and cranked three home runs to cruise to a 12-4 victory in the finale.

The Saints scored in the bottom of the first when Kelsey Martin tallied on Sheridon Sprague's single to center. Lincoln tied the game in the top of the fourth before the Saints retook the lead 2-1 on a Blue Tigers' fielding error. Megan Heimbaugh hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the visitors ahead 3-2 but Maryville answered in the home half. The Saints strung together six straight hits to surge back. Ashley Marks and Dani Williams started the parade with consecutive doubles, and Wendy Macias tacked on an RBI single. Angie Ochoa then launched a two-run homer to highlight the outburst. The Saints finished the game with 14 hits as Macias picked up her eighth win of the season.

In game two, the Saints took charge with six runs on eight hits in the bottom of the first. Martin started the inning with a single, and on the first pitch she saw, Meredith Brown launched the ball over the fence in left for a 2-0 lead. One out later, Sprague followed with a solo homer to build a 3-0 lead. Ochoa kept the line moving with a single, and Krystal Rock used her speed and tripled to right center. Alex Flasch lashed a ball to center for an RBI and reached third on a Lincoln error. Marks singled to plate the sixth run of the inning. Courtney Ferguson smacked a two-run homer in the second inning for an 8-0 lead. Kaelyn Worman singled in the third, stole second and took third on a ground out. Martin had an RBI ground out to score Worman for a 9-0 margin.

Lincoln (3-41) got on board with a run in the fourth and added three more scores in the fifth to trim the Saints advantage to 9-4. In the home half of the fifth, Worman walked and Wernle singled. Martin put down a sac bunt but Lincoln misplayed the ball and all three runners scored to end the game 12-4 via run rule. Maryville had three homers in a game for the first time since smashing four in a game at Lewis earlier this year.

Sprague recorded four strikeouts to pick up the win in the circle for the Saints who improved to 14-25 overall. Maryville is back in action Friday as they travel to face No. 12 ranked Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley doubleheader.
