The Maryville volleyball team was looking to win its second straight match at the 2016 Mizuno Crossover Tournament but was halted in four sets by Walsh University. The Cavaliers won over the Saints by set scores of 25-14, 18-25, 25-22, 25-19. For the third straight match at the Crossover, Allison Lakin reached double digits in kills with 11.
Walsh hit a stunning .722 to win the first set before the Saints rallied to take the second set. Maryville scored the first two points until the Cavaliers scored their first point. Zoe Zeiter had a kill that sparked a 4-0 burst. She and Kara Wright teamed up on a block, and Walsh had a hitting miscue. Anther Zeiter kill pushed the Saints up 6-1. Later, Walsh took the lead fueled by a 7-0 run but the Saints tied the score at 12-12. Lakin then delivered three straight kills, and after a Walsh hitting error, Maggie Murphy served an ace for a 17-13 lead. Walsh cut the lead down to three but a 4-0 burst by the Saints sealed the win.
The Saints opened the third set by scoring four straight points to build a 5-1 edge. Walsh used a 5-0 to jump ahead. The teams traded the lead and Walsh went up 19-17. Emma Basler had a kill, Walsh committed an error and Ashley Selman and Cassidy Arndt combo block pushed the Saints ahead 20-19. Walsh tied the score before Basler drilled home a kill for a 21-20 lead. The Cavaliers scored four straight to close the set.
Maryville used a 4-0 burst early in set four to jump ahead 6-3. A Selman kill gave the Saints an 11-7 lead but Walsh eventually tied the set at 12-all and eventually took a three-point lead. The Saints came back and tied the score at 18-18 capped by Makayla Campbell's consecutive aces. Unfortunately, Walsh reeled off a 5-0 run and held on for the victory.
Selman and Basler both finished with nine kills apiece, while Kayla Buxton handled 19 assists and chipped in eight digs. Murphy led the Saints (3-19) with nine digs. Gina Kramer led Walsh with 14 kills as the Cavaliers (7-12) hit .258 in the contest.
Maryville is back to Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday, Oct. 21, when it plays at William Jewell.
