St. Louis – The Maryville men's soccer team kept its post-season hopes alive as the Saints defeated the University of Missouri – St. Louis 2-1 in a double overtime thriller at the Lou Fusz Soccer Complex Wednesday evening.
After a defensive battle for most of the first half, the Tritons (10-6-1, 9-5-1 GLVC) scored in the 42nd minute as Jake Mimeyerkord slotted a shot from seven yards out past a diving Saints goalkeeper
Christian Kjaersgaard to give UMSL a 1-0 lead. The Saints outshot UMSL 9-5 with four of those shots being on frame while Kjaersgaard finished the half with three saves.
Sander Heieren scored the equalizer in the 59th minute as he drilled a free kick from 19-yards out that skipped off an UMSL defender into the goal to tie the match at 1-1. That was the fourth goal of the season for the freshman. The teams traded scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the second half with both goalkeepers making a few outstanding saves.
Maryville controlled the pace in the two overtime sessions and that offensive pressure led to an UMSL foul in the 18-yard box in the 102nd minute.
Nico Andrade took advantage of the foul and drilled the penalty kick into the lower left corner of the goal to give the Saints the come-from-behind victory.
The Saints finished the regular season with a record of 10-7-1, which is their best record since 1998. Maryville finished 7-7-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
With tonight's win, the Saints earned a berth in the 2016 GLVC Men's Soccer Tournament and will play top-seeded Rockhurst on Sunday, Oct. 30, in Kansas City. Game time is yet to be determined.
