Despite a season-high 27 digs from
Maggie Murphy, Quincy dealt the Maryville volleyball team a loss in three straight sets 25-16, 25-23, 25-18. The Saints take a break from Great Lakes Valley Conference as they travel to nationally-ranked Washburn Tuesday evening.
Â
Quincy led 13-8 before the Saints scored three straight.
Ashley Selman started with two straight kills, and a QU error pulled Maryville to 13-11. The Saints stayed within two points on
Cassidy Arndt's kill for 17-15. Arndt had another kill as 20-16 before the Hawks scored the final five points of the set.
Â
Down 1-0 in the second set,
Allison Lakin had a kill to start a 3-0 run. After a
Kara Wright kill, Arndt served an ace for a 3-1 lead. Still up 6-5, Selman and Lakin combined on a block, and
Michelle Escue recorded a service ace for an 8-5 lead. Quincy eventually took a 10-9 lead but
Zoe Zeiter's kill tied the set. Quincy went back up by 14-11 until the Saints stormed back with a 4-0 burst, capped by Lakin's kill. QU held a 21-19 edge before Zeiter put down a ball and a Hawks' error tied the set at 21-all. The teams traded points with the 13thth tie of the set at 23-23 until QU scored two straight.
Â
The Saints roared out to an early 3-0 in set three after Zeiter's kill. The Hawks slowly cut into the Maryville lead and went ahead 6-4. Lakin drew the Saints to 6-5 but the Hawks kept the lead. Down 15-9, the Saints tallied three straight kills to close to 15-12. Maryville was still down 18-15 after a Selman kill. However, that would be as close as the Saints would get.
Â
Murphy's 27 digs are the most by a Maryville player, topping the previous best of 21 by
Makayla Campbell against Lindenwood. The Saints (2-16, 1-8 GLVC) had five players with at least six kills, with Selman leading the way with seven.
Kayla Buxton distributed 19 assists. Taylor McMonagle led Quincy (10-8, 5-4 GLVC) with 13 kills.
