Saints Fall to Cedarville Despite Career-High 19 Points from Grant Sims

- In the final game of the Don Callan Classic, the Maryville men's basketball team dropped an 80-68 decision to host squad Cedarville Saturday afternoon in Ohio. Grant Sims paced the Saints with a career-high 19 points.
 
The Saints broke a 5-5 tie by scoring six straight points to take the lead. Anthony Johnson had a three-point play, and Forrester Sims drilled a 3-pointer for an 11-5 edge. Cedarville scored to end the Maryville run before Nick Miller tallied inside on a layup for a 13-7 cushion. The Saints maintained the lead and went up 22-16 on a 3-pointer by Grant Sims. Johnson knocked down a jumper as the Saints built their biggest lead of the half at 24-16 with 7:43 left. However, Cedarville roared ahead with a big burst before a Jeff Leeson jumper pulled the Saints to within 33-26. The Yellowjackets went into half time with a 34-26 lead.
 
In the second half, Marvin Grant-Clark made one free throw, and he later had a three-point play as the Saints cut the deficit to 36-30. Grant Sims nailed two at the free-throw line as Maryville closed to 39-34. Cedarville answered with a 3-pointer and a jumper to rebuild a double-digit edge. Forrester Sims knocked down two charity shots, and Evan Booker powered inside for a layup to draw the Saints to 53-46 at the 10:56 mark. However, Cedarville went on an 8-0 run to stretch its lead back out. The Saints made a late push when Grant-Clark had a three-point sequence, and Johnson hit a jumper. Forrester Sims drained a 3-pointer as Maryville closed the gap down to 70-62 with just under five minutes to play. Cedarville scored back-to-back baskets as the Saints never got closer than 10 the rest of the way.
 
Grant Sims sank three 3-pointers and half of his 12 shots from the field to record his career best. He also hauled down a career-high seven rebounds to lead the team. Johnson shot 6-of-7 and ended up with 13 points, while Grant-Clark chipped in 12 points. Cedarville had two players score 14 points apiece to lead the way as the Yellowjackets improved to 1-1 on the season.
 
The Saints fall to 0-2 on the year and open the home portion of the slate Tuesday, Nov. 15, when they host Westminster in a 7 p.m. contest at Moloney Arena.
