The Maryville volleyball team made the short trip to the University of Missouri-St. Louis looking to reverse the earlier five-set loss this season, but the host Tritons held off the Saints in four sets. UMSL recorded the win by set scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 25-15 Tuesday night.
In the first set, the Saints tied the score at 4-4 on a Kara Wright kill, and again at 5-all on a Zoe Zeiter kill. UMSL took the lead, and the Saints cut the gap to 9-8 on a kill by Cassidy Arndt. The Tritons scored five of the next six points to take a lead it would not give up. Maryville received back-to-back kills from Allison Lakin, and an UMSL error pulled the Saints to 17-14, but the Tritons held on.
Set two was close throughout before the Saints made a late push. UMSL held a 21-20 lead before a Triton error and a solo block by Ashley Selman gave Maryville a 22-21 edge. UMSL scored two straight before the late charge by the Saints. An UMSL service error and hitting error gave the Saints set point. Selman and Emma Basler combined on a block to give the Saints a 25-23 win.
In set three, Wright's kill trimmed the UMSL lead to 8-7. However, the Tritons tallied five straight to take the lead. Lakin finished off a pass from Michelle Escue before UMSL scored three in a row to take charge. The Saints trailed 8-6 in the fourth set but took the lead with a 3-0 burst. After a setting error, UMSL hit a ball out, and Lakin's kill was good for a 9-8 advantage. The Tritons scored six of the next seven points and eventually closed out the match over the Saints (4-25, 2-14 GLVC)
Lakin led the Saints with 14 kills and added seven digs. Makayla Campbell paced the Saints with 19 digs. Selman added nine kills and six blocks. Four Tritons recorded double-digit kills as UMSL improved to 16-11 overall, 10-6 in the league.
The Saints are back in action Friday, Nov. 11, as they play at Drury University.
