Softball Earns Two Walk-Off Wins Against William Jewell

Chesterfield, Mo. - The Maryville softball team won both games of its doubleheader against William Jewell in walk-off fashion as the Saints claimed 2-1 and 1-0 victories Saturday afternoon at the Chesterfield Valley Athletic Complex. Krystal Rock had the game winner in game one, while Courtney Ferguson had the game-winning hit in the finale.

In game one, the Saints struck for a score in the bottom of the first. Ashley Marks reached on a WJC error and moved to second. Wendy Macias singled to left for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the fourth, and the game remained deadlocked 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh. Macias led off with a single and Hope Miller entered the game as a pinch runner. Bri Livingston put down a sac bunt to move Miller to second. Rock ripped a ball to center that plated Miller with the winning run. Macias picked up the win in the circle and stayed unbeaten on the season.

Game two was a pitcher's duel as Macias and William Jewell's Anna Biondo dominated. Neither team was able to generate much offense as the Saints only managed one hit over the first six innings. The Cardinals got five runners into scoring position but Macias and the Saints defense escaped each time. In the eighth inning, Rock drew a leadoff walk to get the winning rally started. Kelsey Martin singled to put two runners on board. With two outs, Ferguson ripped a single that hit the chalk line just past third base as Rock sprinted home with the game-winning run. Macias was the winner in the finale and ups her record to 13-0.

The Saints continue the best start in school history and are 22-4 overall, 10-2 in the GLVC. The Cardinals drop to 11-17 overall, 3-9 in the league.
