Saints Sweep a Pair of Games at Lincoln

Jefferson City, Mo. - The Maryville softball team took a pair of games from Lincoln Tuesday afternoon in Jefferson City, Mo. The Saints won game one 10-0 and claimed a rain-shortened 2-1 contest in the finale.

The Saints grabbed the early edge with two runs in the first. Alex Flasch had an RBI double, and Nikki Taylor followed with a single for a 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Hope Miller doubled down the line in left for a 4-0 advantage, and later scored on a wild pitch for a five-run cushion. Maryville tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Courtney Ferguson singled in Miller. Flasch plated two more runs as the margin grew to 8-0. The Saints sealed the win with two runs in the top of the fifth. Syd Tockman added an RBI grounder, and Ashley Marks had a sac fly for the game's final run. Taylor gave up just three singles to post the shutout.

In game two, the Saints did all their damage in the second inning. Wendy Macias doubled to start the rally, and Kelsey Martin followed with an RBI single for the first run. She took advantage of two straight passed balls and dashed home with what would prove to be the game-winning run. Lincoln got one run back in the bottom of the fourth and threatened again as it put runners at the corners in the bottom of the fifth. However, Macias rung up a strikeout to end the threat. The Saints put two runners into scoring position in the top of the sixth but heavy rain moved into the area and ended the contest early.

The Saints improve to 8-2 on the season. Lincoln falls to 2-17 on the year. Maryville is back in action Saturday, March 12, as it hosts Lewis for the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Noon. The games will be played at Lindenwood University.
