St. Charles, Mo. - By virtue of a 10-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, the Maryville softball team set a program record for wins in a season with 32. The Saints added to that total by defeating Lincoln University 6-0 in game two. The 2016 edition of the Saints surpassed the previous standard of 31 set by the 2000 team.
Â
The Saints jumped ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Courtney Ferguson walked and stole second.
Nikki Taylor lashed an RBI double to center for a quick 1-0 lead. Starting pitcher
Wendy Macias drilled a single to left to plate Taylor for a 2-0 edge. After an
Alex Flasch single,
Ashley Marks hit a sharp single through the left side of the Lincoln infield to build a 3-0 advantage. In the second,
Krystal Rock walked, stole second and tallied on a Lincoln error.
Â
The Saints scored in their third straight inning and stretched their advantage to 6-0.
Bri Livingston launched a solo home run that hit the light pole in left center, and Ferguson's RBI single scored
Casey Ward. Maryville tacked on three more runs in the fourth frame. The offense was plenty for Macias who retired the first 13 Lincoln batters before finally yielding a single. The Blue Tigers did score two runs in the fifth inning but the Saints tallied a run in the sixth to win the game via run rule. Macias picked up the win, her 17th of the year, to tie the season pitching wins record set by Melissa Taylor in 2000.
Â
Maryville pushed across a run in the bottom of the first for the only run they would need in game two. Rock doubled and Taylor traded places with her as her RBI double was good for a 1-0 lead. Neither team scored until the Saints sealed the win with five runs in the fifth. Marks singled and promptly stole second and third. Macias was hit by a pitch, and
Darby Ferguson came on as a pinch runner and also stole second base. Flasch reached on a fielder's choice that scored Marks, and Livingston's single to left plated Ferguson. Flasch sprinted home on a wild pitch, and after a
Hope Miller bunt single,
Kelsey Martin drove in two runs to close out the scoring. Taylor went six innings and notched eight strikeouts to record the win in the circle.
Sheridon Sprague pitched the final inning to complete the combined shutout over Lincoln (5-42).
Â
The Saints improve to 33-7 on the season. Maryville is next in action Saturday, April 16, when top-ranked Indianapolis visits for a Noon doubleheader.
