St. Charles, Mo. - The Maryville softball team defeated No. 1 Indianapolis 3-2 for the program's first victory over a top-ranked opponent. The highest ranked team the Saints had previously beaten was No. 3 Washington University April 23, 2004.
Wendy Macias also broke the single-season pitching wins record with her 18th on the year. The Greyhounds bounced back to take game two 7-1.
Â
The Greyhounds took an early lead in the third frame as they strung together three straight hits to drive in a pair of runs and take a 2-0 lead over the Saints. Maryville answered back in the fourth as Macias helped her own cause with an RBI single to drive in
Nikki Taylor.
Alex Flasch hammered a single into centerfield to bring in Macias and tie the contest at 2-2. Maryville took the lead in the fifth as
Casey Ward singled to left field and scored the eventual game winner on a
Krystal Rock single to give the Saints a 3-2 advantage.
Â
The Greyhounds attempted to tie the game in the top of the seventh with a walk, but Macias slammed the door on UIndy to claim her 18th win on the season. UIndy All-American pitcher Megan Foley lost for the first time this year and dropped to 30-1. The Maryville win also snapped the eighth-longest winning streak by a pitcher in Division II history. In addition, for the first time in program annals, the Saints clinched a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Â
UIndy started game two off in the same fashion as the first game of the day as they plated a run after loading the bases on a double and a pair of singles off of Saints starter Taylor to take a 1-0 lead in the third. The Greyhounds added two more runs in the fourth as three of the first four batter hit singles to give UIndy a 3-0 lead. Maryville cut into the lead in the fifth as Rock started the inning with a double in the right field gap, and
Ashley Marks would score her from second on an RBI single to right.
Â
Indianapolis (41-2, 22-2 GLVC) added insurance in the seventh with a pair of doubles and a single to extend the lead to 4-1. With bases loaded, UIndy added a bases-clearing double to give them a 7-1 advantage that handed Miranda Tamayo her 11th win on the campaign. Taylor fell to 15-6 on the year for Maryville. Rock led the Saints (34-8, 18-6 GLVC) at the plate with three hits, including a double and a run batted in for the day.
Â
Maryville, ranked sixth in the Midwest Region, returns to action for Senior Day Sunday, April 17, as Saint Joseph College comes to town for a doubleheader that is slated to start at Noon at Lindenwood University.
