Softball Saints Move Past Missouri S&T 6-2 and 3-1

Rolla, Mo. - With two victories Saturday at Missouri S&T, the Maryville softball team reached the 30-win plateau for just the second time in program history. The Saints won game one 6-2 and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 3-1 decision in the finale. Maryville is just one win away from tying the school record for wins at 31 set by the 2000 team.

The teams combined for one hit through three innings before an Alex Flasch two-run homer, her ninth of the season, gave the Saints a 2-0 lead. Maryville tacked on a run in the fifth when Courtney Ferguson had a bunt single, and Ashley Marks put down a sac bunt. Nikki Taylor drilled an RBI single to center for a 3-0 edge. The Miners pulled two runs back in the bottom of the sixth on the only hit of the game starter Wendy Macias surrendered. The Saints sealed the win with three runs in the top of the seventh. Krystal Rock scored on a wild pitch, and Macias added an RBI single. Heather Wernle tallied after a Missouri S&T error for the final score of the game. Taylor picked up the save to preserve the win for Macias and tie the single-season record for saves with three.

After the Miners took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Saints rallied late for the win in game two. The Saints were held to just two base hits in the first four innings before tying the game in the top of the fifth. Kelsey Martin reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Courtney Ferguson delivered the tying run for a 1-1 game. Taylor singled and reached second after a Missouri S&T error, and she took third after a Bri Livingston sac bunt. Flasch delivered an RBI single to score Taylor, and Hope Miller also scored on the play for a 3-1 lead. The Miners had their best chance to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth then they put two runners into scoring position but Taylor induced a fly ball to end the threat.

The Saints are now 30-6 on the season and 16-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference to set a school record for league wins. The Miners are 13-28 overall, 3-17 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action Sunday at Drury.
