Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Tripped up by Northwest Missouri and Sioux Falls

On day two of the Lindenwood Invitational, the Maryville volleyball team won set one in both matches but was unable to close out either contest. The Saints lost 3-2 to Northwest Missouri State and 3-1 in the finale versus Sioux Falls.

Allison Lakin posted a double-double with 18 kills and 17 digs but the Saints let an early 2-0 lead slip away as Northwest Missouri State rallied for a 19-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 15-7 win. The Saints held the Bearcats to a -.026 hitting percentage to take game one. Maryville's offense perked up in set two as the Saints mashed at .314 clip to jump to a 2-0 lead in sets. However, Northwest Missouri answered with its two best hitting sets to force a decisive fifth set. The Saints fell behind 3-0 before picking up their first point, but the Bearcats used another 3-0 run. Maryville scored four of the next five points, capped by a Zoe Zeiter kill to draw within 7-5. The teams traded 2-0 runs as the Saints stayed close at 9-7. The Bearcats capped their run by scoring the final six points of the match to stay undefeated on the season (3-0).

Ashley Selman and Cassidy Arndt both chipped in eight kills apiece, while Makayla Campbell recorded 15 digs. Michelle Escue recorded 18 assists to go along with 11 digs, and Kayla Buxton finished with 22 assists.

The Saints again started strong and claimed the first set 25-19 but were unable to carry the momentum into the remaining games. The set was tied at 4-4 before a Selman kill started a 4-0 burst. USF closed to one point before the Saints tallied three consecutive points. Still up by three, the Saints salted the game away with five straight. In set two, the Saints trailed just 11-10 after an Arndt kill but Sioux Falls scored five of the next six points and held on to even the match.

Set three saw the Saints tie the match at 2-2 until USF grabbed the lead with five consecutive points. Selman had a kill and a USF error pulled the Saints to 7-4. Sioux Falls scored seven of the next eight points and cruised to the win. Maryville was looking to force a fifth set but fell behind 4-0 in the fourth. The Saints scored three straight capped by Maddie Timmermann's kill to cut the deficit to one. Maryville took advantage of back-to-back errors to tie the set at 5-5. USF was holding a 7-6 lead and went on a 4-0 burst. The Saints got as close at 16-13 but USF kept Maryville at bay and closed out the match.

Lakin topped Maryville with nine kills. Timmermann, who hit .429, and Selman contributed seven kills. Campbell had 11 digs, while Kara Wright and Selman amassed five blocks. The Saints hit .304 in the first set but managed just a .108 mark for the contest.

The Saints stand at 1-3 on the season and next play at a tournament hosted by Quincy University Sept. 9-10.
