St. Louis - Despite a career-high 27 points from
Jimmy Barton, the Maryville men's basketball team saw a big second-half rally come up short as Quincy recorded a 90-79 win Saturday afternoon. The Saints cut a 21-point deficit to seven but the Hawks hit six free throws in the final two minutes to blunt the Maryville comeback.

The Hawks took the early lead and were up 13-6 four minutes in. Barton hit back-to-back 3-pointers as the Saints drew to 13-12. Quincy answered with 10 straight points to go up by double digits. Barton against had the answer for Maryville with another triple to pull the Saints to 25-17. QU went on a 13-3 run and eventually took a 46-27 lead at halftime.

Quincy built its biggest lead at 50-29 before the Saints stormed back into the contest. Barton's jumper ignited a 10-0 run.
Forrester Sims knocked down a 3-pointer, and
Grant Sims sank a long jumper.
Jeff Leeson's 3-pointer got the Saints to within 50-39 and forced a Quincy timeout. The Hawks steadied themselves with seven straight and rebuilt a 79-60 lead. The Saints made another charge to get within single digits. Barton drilled another 3-pointer, and the Saints later hit three free throws.

Quincy scored a basket until Maryville tacked on a 7-0 burst.
Anthony Johnson knocked down a jumper, and Forrester Sims scored on a layup. A 3-pointer from Grant Sims pulled the Saints to 81-73 with three minutes to play. Quincy made a triple on its next possession. Forrester Sims scored inside, and Johnson's drive pulled the Saints to 84-77 with 1:20 to go. However, the Saints never got any closer as the Hawks held on with free throws.

Barton poured in 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting and added four free throws to go along with six assists. Leeson finished a career high tying 17 points. Johnson added 11 points, while Forrester Sims finished with 10 points. The Saints sank 11 3-pointers and shot 50.8 percent from the field. Evan McGaughey led Quincy (16-4, 6-3 GLVC) with 23 points and 15 rebounds.

Maryville slips to 7-14 overall, 1-8 in the GLVC. The Saints head to the west side of the state for two games next week at William Jewell and Rockhurst.
