Taylor and Sprague lead the Saints to a pair of wins Saturday

St. Louis – Nikki Taylor and Sheridon Sprague earned complete game wins as the Maryville softball team defeated Missouri S&T, 1-0 and Lincoln University 8-0 in five-innings at Weber Field on the campus of Maryville University.

Both Taylor and Miner pitcher Avery English had control of the game from the on-set as they combined for 15 strikeouts on the afternoon. It was not until the sixth inning that the Saints were able to break the scoreless tie. Sydney Halleen opened the inning with a single up the middle and moved over to second base on a Kelsey Martin sacrifice bunt. Courtney Ferguson scored Halleen with a single to center field to give the Saints the lead. The Miners had a runner get to second base in the top of the seventh, but Taylor forced a fly ball out to end the game.

Taylor improved to 2-1 on the season with a five hit complete game shutout while adding eight strikeouts on the afternoon. Ferguson paced the Maryville offense by going 2-of-3 with the game-winning run batted in.

Game two saw the Saints take control of matters in the second inning as Sam Hausl opened with a single and scored on a fielding error to give Maryville the early 1-0 advantage over Lincoln. After Lincoln went down quietly in the top of the third, the Saints scored five runs on four hits to extend the lead to 6-0. Sheridan Sprague reached base on a one out single and moved to second on an error. Hausl singled to left field to score a run while Ashley Marks added another single to score another run. Emily Frankenreiter provided the big blast with a three run blast to left field to give the Saints the 6-0 lead. Maryville would finish the game by adding a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to improve their record to 3-3 on the year.

Sheridan moved her record to 1-1 on the campaign in tossing a one hitter and adding three strikeouts. Hausl went 2-of-3 with an RBI and scored a pair runs in the win.

Maryville continues play tomorrow as the Saints will take on Missouri S&T at 10 a.m. and then Columbia College in a 2 p.m. start at Weber Field.
