Final Super Region III bracket results
Moorhead, Minn. - Nate Rodriguez and Donnell Walker won titles on the final day of the NCAA Division II Super Region III to pace the Maryville wrestling team in Moorhead, Minn. Rodriguez claimed the title at 141, while Walker toppled the top two ranked opponents in the 285 claim to win his championship. As a team, the Saints finished in third place with 102 points, behind St. Cloud State (147) and McKendree (121).
Rodriguez won his semifinal match by a 6-1 count, then ran up against long-time foe Darren Wynn. He was up 4-1 and used a big surge and eventually won 8-5. Walker faced Austin Goergen of St. Cloud State who was undefeated at 25-0 and the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the nation. Walker was down late but used a takedown in the third period to force overtime. He then won the match with another takedown 24 seconds into overtime for the SV-1 6-4 triumph. In the finals, Walker beat No. 2 seeded Michael Lowman 12-7 to win the title.
At 125, Jaret Singh lost 6-1 in the semifinals but battled back with 5-3 and 4-3 wins to earn fourth place. James Krischke won his semifinal bout in a 7-5 score but was undone with a late score by Tyler Stenberg in a 6-2 decision for the 149 title. In the 157 classification, Greg Hegarty battled all the way to the fourth-place match but saw his day end there via a rule decision.
Zeb Wahle was edged out 3-2 in the semifinals but won his consolation semifinal 3-2, then notched a 5-2 victory over Uthman Rabiu to take third place. Ethan Sherertz reached the finals with a fall at the 2:57 mark of his semifinal match against Jared Rennick of Drury. However, in the title bout, he was narrowly defeated by Ben Goodwin by a 5-4 score.
The Saints advanced six individuals, and Greg Hegarty as an alternate, to the NCAA Division II National Championships March 11-12, to be held in Birmingham, Ala.
