Despite
Jacob Campbell firing in four goals and a season-high tying 19 saves by
William DeVinney, the Maryville lacrosse team closed out its inaugural season with a 14-4 defeat at No. 15 Lindenwood Friday evening.
Â
The Saints battled the nationally-ranked Lions as the Saints were looking for their second straight victory. However, Lindenwood kept Maryville at bay in the first half and took a 9-0 lead. Campbell finally broke through for the Saints at the 8:47 mark. He found the back of the net just over a minute later as the Saints cut their deficit to 9-2. Lindenwood pushed its edge back to 11-2 after three quarters. Campbell completed his hat trick with 13:28 remaining in the game off a feed from
Nick Witte. Campbell notched his 25th goal of the season with 10:49 left from an assist by
Brenden Symons. However, Lindenwood stopped the Maryville comeback with three late goals in the fourth quarter.
Â
DeVinney was outstanding in the first quarter and made eight saves in the first 15 minutes to keep the Saints close. He tied his best effort of the season when he came up with 19 saves in the game against Rockhurst April 1, 2017. Campbell closed his season with a rush as he scored at least three goals in each of the final five games. Kyle Lee led Lindenwood (10-4) with three goals as nine different players scored for the Lions.
Â
The Saints finish their first season with a record of 1-14.
