The Maryville women's basketball team traveled to Division I Illinois State Sunday afternoon and challenged the Redbirds before ISU pulled away in the final minute for a 61-52 win. The contest was an exhibition game for the Saints. The Saints had three players score in double figures.
 
What Happened
Stephanie Sherwood had a basket and a 3-pointer to give the Saints the early 5-0 lead. Maryville's defense kept ISU off the scoreboard for nearly four minutes and built the advantage to as many as seven points. The Saints held the lead the entire first 10 minutes and were up 16-12 after the first quarter. The Redbirds went on a 7-0 run and took their first lead at 21-20 and settled for a 33-26 margin at the half.
 
The Saints went on a 7-2 run to cut a seven-point lead down to 40-38 with 4:52 left in the third. Kayla Steward drained a long wing 3-pointer, and Mary Barton and Abby Monis scored to pull Maryville to within two. The Redbirds answered with their own 7-2 run and built a 47-40 lead heading into the final quarter.
 
Sherwood began the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer as the Saints remained within striking distance. ISU pushed to a 51-43 margin before Maryville again answered. Barton drained a three pointer, and after one Redbird free throw, Steward sank two at the stripe to pull the Saints to 52-48 with 3:14 left. The Saints again were down four points 56-52 after a Steward hoop at the 1:27 mark. Illinois State scored the final five points to pull away.
