Summary
No. 16 Southern Indiana proved worthy of its national ranking as it downed Maryville 75-50 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday in Evansville, Ind. Mary Barton led the Saints with 11 points but was the only Saint in double figures.
What Happened
Down 8-4, the Saints scored five straight points to move ahead. Ali Ringering scored on a layup, and Stephanie Sherwood drilled a 3-pointer for a 9-8 lead midway through the first quarter. The game was tied 11-11 after a Ringering bucket but USI scored the last eight points of the quarter. Barton made one free throw to break the Maryville scoring drought but Southern Indiana had built up a double-digit lead. The Saints got to within 10 on a Barton triple before the Screaming Eagles took a 34-23 edge at halftime.
Early in the third, the Saints used a 7-2 run and got as close as six. Adrienne Horn scored with Kayla Steward making a 3-pointer and two free throws. The Saints were down just 40-34 with six minutes to play. USI pushed the advantage with a 13-4 run and put the game away in the fourth quarter.
