St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team battled back from a five-run deficit to force extra innings but fell short as No. 14 University of Indianapolis defeated the Saints 10-5 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon at Weber Field.
What Happened:
The Greyhounds raced out an early lead after scoring two runs in the both the third and sixth innings and a single run in the fourth to grab a 5-0 lead, but the Saints begin to mount a comeback in the home half of the sixth.
Connor Markell got Maryville going in the inning with a single and moved to second on a throwing error. After
Cherokee Boynton entered the game as a pinch runner,
Cody Klotz hit an inside the park homer to cut the UIndy lead to 5-2. The Saints used the long ball in the seventh inning as
Louis Niemerg drilled a homer to left center field to get Maryville to within two runs at 5-3.
Daniel Covert began the eighth inning by being hit by a pitch to reach first and
Garrett Taylor tied the game at 5-5 with a blast off the scoreboard in left field. The Saints had an opportunity to win the game in the ninth, but left the bases loaded as the Greyhounds forced a pop up to push the game to extra innings. UIndy broke the game open in the 10
th inning with five runs and held on to sweep the two-game series.
