St. Louis – The Maryville University baseball team could not overcome an early deficit as the Saints fell to Saginaw Valley State 5-4 in the opener of a four-game series at Weber Field Friday afternoon.
 
What Happened:
The Cardinals grabbed the lead early in the contest with three runs in the third inning and then tacked on another run in the fifth to take a 4-0 advantage. The Saints answered in the home half of the fifth as Cody Klotz singled and moved to third on a Cardinal throwing error and scored on a Drake Lubin single to left field to cut the Saginaw Valley lead to 4-1. Maryville kept the inning alive as Lubin moved to third on a stolen base and a throwing error and then scored on a Brennan Williams single to pull Maryville to within two runs. The Saints added one more run in the fifth as Zach Ruckman was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to make the score 4-3. The Cardinals extended their lead to 5-3 with a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single, but the Saints continued to battle as Maryville took advantage of four walks and an error to again cut the lead to 5-4 in the eighth inning. The Saints had a chance in the ninth as Garrett Taylor drew a walk and advanced to third, but would not go no further as the game ended on a fly out to center field.
