Despite having to forfeit two matches, the Maryville women's tennis team nearly posted a road win at William Woods but the Owls prevailed 5-4.
The duo of Ashley Dowden and Sandra Hinterberger claimed an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles to garner the first Maryville point. WWU took the top doubles match, while the Saints had to forfeit the contest at No. 3.
In singles play, the Saints surged as Sarah Etter took a 6-2, 6-4 win at the top slot. Hinterberger improved to 2-0 on the day as the eased to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Lina Kunert kept the Saints rolling with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles. However, the Owls took the final three matches, including a walkover in the sixth singles match.
The Saints fall to 7-6 on the year, while the Owls improve to 9-3. Maryville is back on the court Friday, April 13, as it hosts Rockhurst at 2 p.m. at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in Forest Park.
