Kansas City, Mo. – The Maryville baseball team pounded out 28 hits while
Dalton Schumer drove in nine runs on the night as the Saints swept Rockhurst University Friday night at Loyola Park in Kansas City, Mo. The Saints laced 20 hits in the opener to defeat the Hawks 19-5 and then took the nightcap 6-4 to extend their winning streak to five games.
Game One:
The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. Maryville answered in their part of the frame as the Saints hit three consecutive singles to push across a run to cut the lead to 2-1. Schumer drew the Saints even with Rockhurst with a sacrifice fly to knot the game at 2-2. The Saints took control of the contest in the second as they scored five runs on five hits to take a 7-2 advantage. Schumer highlighted the inning with a grand slam over the left field wall. After the Hawks tallied a run in the fifth to cut the Maryville lead to 7-3, the Saints added to their lead as Schumer hit a bases-loaded single to score two runs to extend the advantage to 9-3.
Garrett Taylor then connected for an RBI single and
Cody Klotz added an RBI single as Maryville stretched the lead to 13-3. The Saints tacked on another run off a sacrifice fly in the sixth to put them ahead 14-3. The Hawks cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the seventh to make the score 14-5.
Zack Ruckman got those two runs back in the eighth with a single through the left side to extend the lead to 16-5. The Saints were not done yet in the eighth as
Austin Tapella drilled a three-run blast to give Maryville a 19-5 lead.

Rockhurst grabbed an early lead with a run in the second and two runs in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. Maryville answered in the bottom of the third as the Saints used a Schumer two-run double that was followed by a Ruckman RBI single, and then a
Domonic Connolly RBI single to take a 4-3 lead. The Hawks posted a run in the fourth tie the game at 4-4, but the Saints re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning as Williams drew a free pass and scored on a Niemerg double to left center to make the score 5-4. Maryville added an insurance run in the sixth as
Drake Lubin singles and scored on a Williams triple to extend the lead to 6-4.
