St. Louis –
Alyssa Callans struck out 11 batters and lashed a pair of doubles in the nightcap to help the Maryville softball team to a split with Pittsburg State Tuesday evening at Weber Field. The Gorillas took the lead in the second inning of the opener and cruised to a 12-8 win over the Saints. Callans added a run batted in with her two hits to lead Maryville to a 9-3 to salvage the split.
Game One:
The Saints grabbed the early lead as
Jaclyn Pasakarnis lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score
Taylor Shingler from third and give Maryville a 1-0 lead. The Gorillas scored six runs over the next two innings to take a 6-1 advantage, but the Saints cut into the lead in the third. Shingler scored on an error and Callans hit a sacrifice fly to score a run and cut the Pitt State lead to 6-4. The Gorillas added to the lead in the fourth with three more runs to extend their lead to 9-4. Maryville battled back with a run in the fifth and sixth inning to cut the deficit to 9-6. Pitt State scratched across three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-6 lead, but the Saints pushed two runs across in the seventh as
Samantha Hausl and
Shaina Kmetz each lashed RBI singles to cut the lead to 12-8.

Maryville got out to an early lead in first frame as Pasakarnis scored on a Callans double while Callans scored on a field error to take a 2-0 lead. The Gorillas rallied in the top of the second to score three runs to take a 3-2 advantage. Shingler evened the contest in the home half of the second as she drew a bases-loaded walk to push the score to 3-3. The game remained tied until
Emily Bruin drilled a two-run single in the fifth inning to give the Saints a 5-3 lead. Maryville added three more runs as Kmetz and Shingler added RBI singles while
Emily Frankenreiter lifted a sacrifice fly to right to give Maryville an 8-3 lead. Callans earned her seventh win of the year by striking out 11 Gorilla batters and holding them without a hit over the last four innings of play.
