St. Louis – The Maryville University softball team needed to work extra innings in the opener of their doubleheader against Upper Iowa en route to a split with the Peacocks Friday evening at Weber Field. The Saints took the first game of the day, 8-7 in eight innings and then fell to Upper Iowa 5-3 in the nightcap.
Game One:
The Peacocks cracked the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead, but the Saints answered in the home half of the frame.
Jaclyn Pasakarnis hit a double with two outs and came home as
Alyssa Callans hit a two-run blast to tie the game at 2-2. After Upper Iowa regained the lead in the top of the second, Maryville once again answered with three runs on four hits to take a 5-3 advantage.
Shaina Kmetz opened the inning with a double moved to third after a pair of singles. Kmetz scored after a walk while Pasakarnis hit into a fielder's choice to drive in another runner to make the score 4-3. Callans added an RBI single in the inning to extend the lead to 5-3. Upper Iowa took the lead again with three runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to make the score 7-5. Maryville cut the deficit in half in the home half of the sixth as
DJ Aaron-Holman drew a bases-loaded walk to push the score to 7-6. Maryville forced an extra inning in the seventh as
Jordan Michalski lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Olivia Jarvis and tie the game at 7-7. In the extra frame, Upper Iowa went down in order and the Saints finished the comeback as Pasakarnis drilled an RBI single to left center to give Maryville the win.

Game Two:
The Peacocks once again raced out to an early lead with three runs in the second inning, but Maryville plated a run in the after Callans doubled and moved to third on a Kmetz single. Callans scored on a wild pitch to cut the Upper Iowa lead to 3-1. Maryville got to within a run in third frame as Callans hit a sacrifice fly to score
Hannah Tolley and make the score 3-2. The Saints tied the game in the fourth inning as
Emily Frankenreiter ripped an RBI single to right center field to knot the game at 3-3. The Peacocks grabbed the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs to take a 5-3 lead and were able to hold on as they limited the Saints to only two hits over the last three innings to end the Maryville eight game winning streak.
