Maryville women's basketball was eliminated in overtime 88-82 by Truman State in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Friday night in Edwardsville, Ill. The loss spoiled a 21-point effort by
Mary Barton who led five Saints in double figures. The Saints led 81-80 in overtime but Truman State scored eight straight to take control late.

What Happened
Truman State opened the scoring but Barton tied the game at 77-77. The Bulldogs took a 79-77 edge before Steward splashed in a 3-pointer to give the Saints an 80-79 lead with 1:41 to play. However, Truman scored the next eight points to surge ahead.

The Saints found the range early from 3-point range and turned a 9-8 deficit into an 18-10 lead.
Abby Monis hit a layup, and
Jayda Jansen knocked down a 3-pointer. Truman made one free throw before
Stephanie Sherwood answered with two at the line. A deep 3-pointer from
UU Longs was good for an 18-10 lead. The Saints settled for a 21-15 lead after the first quarter.

Mary Barton made two at the line to start a 6-0 burst for Maryville. Sherwood nailed a jumper, and another jumper by Jansen was good for a 36-27 margin at the 3:51 mark. However, Truman rallied and took the lead 40-39. Longs sank a jumper late to push the Saints up 41-40 at the break.

The score was tied at 44 before the Saints surged ahead. Monis sank a wing jumper and was fouled for the three-point play. Sherwood sank a triple but Truman scored inside.
Taylor Kirby converted from the left baseline. Another 3-pointer by Barton was good as the Saints surged to 55-46 to force a Truman timeout. Truman cut into the deficit but Steward's layup started a 6-0 burst.
Hunter Stidham scored and another Steward layup was good for a 64-52 lead. Monis powered for a layup at the buzzer as the Maryville margin grew to 68-54 heading to the final quarter.

Monis opened the fourth quarter with a basket for a 70-54 lead, the largest of the night. However, Truman answered with 16 straight points and tied the game. On the next possession, Barton drilled a 3-pointer to restore the Saints lead at 73-70 with 3:31 to play. Truman scored but Sherwood had a steal and Monis converted a fastbreak layup for a 75-73 edge with 1:08 remaining. Truman tied the game with 49 seconds to play. The Saints missed but their defense stood tall and made a stand to force overtime.
