Quincy, Ill. – The Maryville University baseball team extended their winning streak to six games with a sweep of No. 7 Quincy University in a non-conference match-up Wednesday afternoon at QU Stadium in Quincy, Ill. The Saints scored two runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie to defeat the Hawks 5-4 in the opener.
Louis Niemerg hit a pair of two-run home runs to power Maryville to a 9-3 victory in the nightcap. This is the second time this year that the Saints have defeated a ranked opponent.
Game One:
Cody Klotz opened the scoring for the Saints in the top of the first with a two-run blast over the right field wall to give Maryville an early 2-0 lead. The Hawks answered back in the home half of the inning with a pair of run of their own to tie the contest at 2-2. The Saints regained the lead in the second as
Derek Renner blasted his second home run of the year to put Maryville ahead 3-2. Quincy once again evened the game in the fourth with a run on two hits to knot the game at 3-3. The score remained tied until the seventh as
Daniel Covert opened the inning by getting hit by a pitch and moved to third on a double down the left field line by
Dominic Connolly. Covert and Connolly both scored on consecutive groundouts to push the Saints ahead 5-3. The Hawks cut the lead in half in the home half of the seventh with a run to make the score 5-4. Quincy had a chance in the ninth with runners on first and second and one out, but reliever
Tanner Marshall forced a double play to end the uprising and earn his sixth save of the year.

After a scoreless first two innings of play, the Saints exploded for four runs in the top of the third as
Drake Lubin ripped a two-run double and Niemerg smashed a two-run homer to stake Maryville to a 4-0 advantage. The offensive fireworks continued in the fourth as Connolly hit a two-run single and Niemerg launched his second two-run home run of the game to extend the lead to 8-0. The Hawks scored three times in the seventh frame to cut the Maryville lead to 8-3, but
Cade Schares pushed the advantage to 9-3 with a solo blast to right field.
