Despite a career-high eight goals from Player of the Year Lucas Shafer in the semifinals of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, No. 3 seed Maryville was tied in the fourth quarter versus No. 2 Rockhurst but the Hawks pulled away for an 18-13 win at Key Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Hawks scored the first two goals of the game before the Saints responded with a 3-0 run. Shafer fired in two straight to get Maryville on the board. Tim McCarthy tallied on a transition goal to push the Saints ahead 3-2 at the 9:24 mark. Rockhurst went back up but Shafer answered to complete a hat trick and a 4-4 tie. The Hawks scored late in the first quarter for a 5-4 edge.

Neither team dented the net for more than seven minutes before Ty Wenck pulled the Saints even 5-5 with a hard shot from the left side. Rockhurst took another lead but David Zingaro equalized at the 3:17 mark as he bounced in a goal as the game was deadlocked 6-6 at halftime.

Jacob Allen pushed the Saints ahead as he shuffled in the opening goal of the second half for a 7-6 edge three minutes in. However, Rockhurst scored on the next possession and tacked on two more goals. Shafer again had the answer for Maryville as he circled around the RU cage to get the team back to 9-8. Rockhurst took a 10-8 lead but Shafer notched his fifth goal of the day to trim the deficit to 10-9 at the end of the third.

At the 13:05 mark of the final quarter, Shafer fired in his sixth goal of the game to deadlock the game at 10-10. However, the Hawks tallied three goals in just under four minutes to extend their lead and close out the victory. Shafer ended the game with eight goals and two assists to pace the Maryville attack. Allen had two goals and one assist, while Wenck had one goal and one assist. Liam Coyle came up with 18 saves in the nets for the Saints.

The Saints end their season at 9-6 with five of their losses coming to nationally-ranked teams. The Hawks (12-3) advance to the GLVC championship game against host Indianapolis
