Joplin, Mo. –
Cody Siebenberger threw a three hitter and struck out six to lead the Maryville baseball team to a 7-1 victory over Northwest Missouri State Friday evening in the first round of the MIAA/GLVC Crossover.
Ben Hopkins added a pair of RBI singles to pace the Saints offense in the game held at Warren Turner Field in Joplin, Mo.
Game One: After a scoreless first inning, the Saints opened the scoring in the second as
Cade Schares launched a home run over the right center field wall to put Maryville on top 1-0. The Bearcats had a chance to tie the game with bases loaded and one out in the second, but Siebenberger forced a flyout to center for the second out. The Saints got out of the inning on the play as the runner left early from third to keep the score at 1-0.
Maryville extended the lead in the third as
Austin Tapella ripped an RBI double and
Alex Hoff lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Tapella to put the Saints ahead 3-0.
The Bearcats cut into the Maryville lead with a run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Saints answered with three runs in the top of the eighth. Hopkins and
Elias Stevens each cracked RBI singles and Schares scored on a throwing error to extend the Maryville advantage to 6-1. Hopkins added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with another RBI single to give the Saints a 7-1 lead.
Siebenberger tossed a three hitter over 6.2 innings to earn his first win of the season while
Hayden House garnered his first save of the young campaign.
