Austin Tapella cracked a pair of hits and drove in a run to propel the Maryville baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Washburn Sunday afternoon in the final day of the MIAA/GLVC Crossover.
Kaleb Huxford and
Ryan Scharf combined for a three-hitter to give the Saints a 2-1 record in the crossover held in Joplin, Mo.
What Happened:
Washburn broke out to an early lead as the Ichabods pushed across a run on a double steal in the third to take a 1-0 lead. The Saints answered in the top of the fifth as
Austin Tapella lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score
Nick Guerra and then
Wyatt Elbe hit an RBI single through the right side to give Maryville a 2-1 advantage.
That is all that the Saints needed a Huxford limited Washburn to three hits over eight innings of action while striking out six batters to earn his first win of the season.
Ryan Scharf threw a flawless ninth frame to garner his first save of the year.
