In the first women's lacrosse game at the new Maryville Athletic Complex, Maryville dropped a 17-5 decision to No. 16 Grand Valley State Thursday. Haley Downs and Jessie Hynes scored twice for the Saints to pace the attack.
 
The Lakers scored on the opening possession of the game but Downs recorded the first Maryville goal three minutes into the contest. GVSU tacked on four more goals until Hynes tallied her first of the day. In the final minute of the half, Julie Banfield found the back of the net to pull the Saints to within 10-3.
 
GVSU started the second half with five more goals until Downs and Hynes connected on back-to-back goals. Banfield had one goal and one assist on the day for the Saints. Abbi O'Neal led Grand Valley State with five goals and one assist. Tabatha Saake recorded 10 saves on the day and picked up three ground balls.
 
The Saints suffered their first defeat of the season and now stand at 2-1 overall. The Lakers improve to 3-1 on the year. Maryville hits the road for three straight games as they travel to West Virginia to take on Alderson Broaddus Monday, March 9.
