Saints Softball Earns Split with Rockhurst

Kansas City, Mo. – The Maryville softball team used small ball Sunday afternoon to earn a split against Rockhurst at Loyola Softball Park in Kansas City, Mo. Timely hitting from Kim Debold gave the Saints a 3-2 win in the first game of the day. The Saints put up a fight in game two, but Rockhurst came away on top 4-3 in an extra innings battle.

Game One:
The Saints and Hawks were caught up in a pitcher's duel until Maryville scored twice in the fifth inning. Melanie Nelson and Katelynn Charlton got the inning going with a pair of singles to get runners on base. McKenna McCoy then drove in Nelson with a single to left field and Taylor Shingler pushed Charlton across with an infield single to give the Saints a 2-0 advantage.

DeBold added to the Saints lead in the top of the sixth inning. The second baseman knocked a triple to center and was able to score on the play after a Rockhurst fielding error, extending the Saints lead to 3-0. The Hawks drove in a pair of runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as Alyssa Callans collected her fifth win of the year, striking out nine.

The Saints had a similar scoring summary in the fifth inning. Tolley reached on a single to center and then stole her second base of the day to get into scoring position. Taylor Shingler grounded out to the pitcher, but successfully moved Tolley over to third. Callans would then beat out an infield single with two outs to push Tolley across and give the Saints a 2-1 lead. The Hawks matched the Saints in the sixth inning to make it tied 2-2.
