St. Louis – The Maryville baseball team dropped the series finale to UMSL in a slugfest on Sunday afternoon.
Alex Hoff led the way for the Saints with a homerun and three RBIs, but it was not enough as the Tritons secured the 10-9 victory.
Game One:
The Tritons hopped on the scoreboard with a run in the first, giving them an early 1-0 lead. The Saints responded in the bottom half of the first after leadoff hitter
Nick Hofmann walked and stole second.
Dominic Connolly pushed him over to third with a single to left, which allowed
Ben Hopkins to drive in Hofmann with a sacrifice fly to center making the score 1-1.
UMSL broke the tie in the second inning, adding a run to make it a 2-1 ballgame. Maryville answered in the third inning after Connolly and Hopkins found their way on base.
Alex Hoff then came up clutch with a single down the left field line, bringing home Connolly to make it 2-2. Hopkins and Hoff made their way home courtesy of two wild pitches and smart base running to give the Saints a 4-2 lead.
The Tritons put up two runs in the fourth inning to tie the score, 4-4. UMSL continued to pour it on with two runs in the sixth inning and four runs in the seventh inning to make it a 10-4 ballgame.
Maryville added a pair of runs of their own in the seventh inning to make it 10-6 when
Michael Gould ripped a ball past the left fielder to bring home Schuler and Hofmann. The Saints kept swinging as Hoff made it a 10-8 deficit with a two-run blast to left field, his fifth of the year. From long ball to small ball,
Jackson Burrell laid down a perfect bunt to bring home
Elias Stevens and make the score 10-9.
The Saints could not draw any closer as the Tritons retired three of the final five Saints batters and claimed the victory 10-9.
