Saints Need Extra Innings to Salvage Split With McKendree

St. Louis – The Maryville softball team needed to work extra innings in the nightcap to salvage a split with McKendree Friday afternoon at the Maryville Athletic Complex. The Bearcats took the opener 2-0 while the Saints won the back half of the doubleheader 5-4 in 11 innings.
 
Game One:
The opener started in a pitcher's duel as both Alyssa Callans and the Bearcats starter combined for 13 strikeouts over the first four innings. McKendree struck first in the fifth as they scored a run on a pair of singles to grab a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats extended the lead in the sixth with a run on three hits to push the advantage to 2-0. The Saints had an opportunity in the bottom of the seventh with runners at first and second and one out, the Bearcats were able to retire the final two Maryville batters to claim the win.

Game Two:
After McKendree scored in the first to take a 1-0 lead, the Saints grabbed the lead in the home half of the second as Melanie Nelson opened the inning with a single while Lexi Touchette drew a walk to put runners at first and second. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners up, McKenna McCoy hit an infield single to push both runners across as it gave Maryville a 2-1 lead.
 
The Bearcats grabbed the lead again in the top of the fifth with three runs to make the score 4-2. The Saints drew even with the Bearcats in the bottom of the sixth as Kim DeBold ripped a two-run single to right field to score Shingler and McCoy to tie the game at 4-4. 
 
The score remained tied until the home half of the 11th inning as McCoy reached third on a Bearcat fielding error and scored on a Shingler sacrifice fly to left field to give the Saints the 5-4 win and a split for the day.
