St. Louis – The Maryville softball team earned a split against Southern Indiana on Senior Day Sunday afternoon at the Maryville Athletic Complex. In game one, the Saints fell behind early, but battled back to win 8-3. Game two was a tight one, but the Screaming Eagles came away victorious, 3-2.
Game One:
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the opening frame with two runs to earn a 2-0 lead. The Saints pulled one back in the bottom of the first as
Alyssa Callans hit a chopper up the middle to drive in
Taylor Shingler, making the score 2-1.
In the second inning, Shingler singled to left to drive in
Taylor Duff and
Melanie Nelson, giving the Saints a 3-2 advantage. USI added a run in the third to tie the game 3-3.
Maryville broke the tie in the fourth inning when
DJ Aaron-Holman smacked a double to left and Duff was able to score all the way from first. Aaron-Holman found her way to third and was brought home thanks to a clutch two-out infield single by Shingler to make it a 5-3 Saints lead.
The Saints added some insurance in the sixth inning when pinch-runners
Callie Harrison and
Tori Forbeck came around to score, as well as
Melanie Nelson to secure the 8-3 victory.

Game Two:
USI notched a run in the first inning, fourth inning, and fifth inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Saints could not muster any offense until the fifth inning. Nelson and
Kim DeBold singled to start the inning, which gave way for Callans to drive them both in with a single to center and make it a 3-2 ballgame.
The Saints could not edge any closer, as the Screaming Eagles took the nightcap, 3-2.
