Saints Earn a Weekday Split against Illinois Springfield

St. Louis – The Maryville softball team gained a split decision with Illinois Springfield on Tuesday afternoon at the Maryville Athletic Complex. Game one was won on a walk-off single by Taylor Shingler in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 Saints victory. The nightcap was tight for the first six innings, but a four-run seventh inning gave the Prairie Stars an 8-3 win.

Game One:
The Prairie Stars found a run in the first, but the Saints answered immediately in the bottom half when Alyssa Callans helped her own cause with a single up the middle to bring in Shingler from second, tying the game 1-1.

Maryville broke the tie in the second inning after a leadoff double by Taylor Duff put a runner in scoring position. Melanie Nelson brought her home with a single to left field, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Saints. Illinois Springfield answered back in the top of the third with a run their own to tie it up again, 2-2.

The Saints and Prairie Stars traded scoreless innings until the bottom of the seventh when Shingler drove in Kylie Swinney from second with a single up the middle to give the Saints a 3-2 walkoff victory.

In the third inning, the Prairie Stars notched three runs to take a 4-1 advantage. The longball was the first career homerun for the sophomore first baseman and it cut the Maryville deficit to 4-2.

Callans started a rally in the sixth for the Saints with a leadoff double and was driven in by Nolde to make it a 4-3 ballgame, but it would not be enough as the Prairie Stars added four insurance runs in the seventh and won game two, 8-3.
