St. Charles, Mo. – For the second time in three seasons, the Maryville men's soccer team needed penalty kicks to claim the Great Lakes Valley Conference Soccer Championship. After playing Indianapolis to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes, the Saints claimed the title by a score of 5-3 over the Greyhounds in the shootout.
What Happened – The Saints and Greyhounds played to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes of action with each team having nine shots and two shots on frame.
The Saints wasted no time in scoring in the second half as
Grady Schliepsiek collected a pass from
Ben Brodie and fired a shot into the upper left side of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 50
th minute. The Greyhounds answered in the 54
th with a to even the match at 1-1. The two teams played on even terms over the remaining 35 minutes of the half to force overtime.
In the first extra frame, both teams had a pair of shots with
Liam Walraven making two saves to keep the match even after the first 10 minutes. In the early stages of the second overtime,
Mirza Hasecic fired a free kick from 35-yards out that just missed high of the goal in the 103
rd minute. The Greyhounds had a chance in the final minute of the second extra session with a shot that was saved by Walraven.
After Hasecic made his penalty kick, the Greyhounds saw their first attempt miss over the top of the goal to give Maryville a 1-0 advantage.
Cedric Sengll,
Dom Riggio, and
Ben Brodie all made their shots while UIndy also made three straight attempts to make the score 4-3.
Eyob Tadesse slotted a shot into the lower left side of the goal to give Maryville the victory.
Inside the Numbers – The Greyhounds outshot the Saints 21-19 and also held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Walraven made eight saves to earn his 12
th win of the season.
