The Maryville softball team went 1-1 on day one to stay alive at the 2021 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament in East Peoria, Ill. In the first game of the tourney, Rockhurst pitcher Lexie Storrer twirled a perfect game as the Saints fell into the consolation bracket. Facing Illinois Springfield in an elimination game, the Saints rallied for a 6-3 triumph. Maryville advances in the tournament and will play at 3 p.m. Friday, May 7, in another elimination tilt.

Rockhurst game:
The Saints fell behind early as Rockhurst tallied three runs in the top of the first. The Hawks kept up their offensive output with three more runs in the second inning and scored in every frame of the game. The Saints were unable to muster a baserunner as Rockhurst pitcher Lexie Storrer twirled a perfect game.

Illinois Springfield game:
Taylor Shingler started the game with a single, took second on a UIS error and reached third after a groundout. Another Prairie Stars miscue allowed Shingler to sprint home for a 1-0 lead. The Saints tacked on another run in the third to build a 2-0 edge.
Alyssa Callans singled and moved to second on an infield out. Yet another UIS error allowed Callans to score for a 2-0 edge.

Maryville held the edge until Calla Wickenhauser hit a three-run homer to push UIS on top 3-2 in the top of the fifth. The Saints answered in the bottom half of the frame.
McKenna McCoy and Shingler started the inning with bunt singles. Callans laced an RBI single to center to tie the game. Shingler scored for the second time on a passed ball to give Maryville a 4-3 lead. In the sixth the Saints scored insurance runs when Callans and
Kim DeBold drew a bases-loaded walks for a 6-3 cushion.
