St. Louis, Mo. - The Maryville volleyball team hosted Southwest Baptist University for the first home match of the 2021 fall campaign but could not tame the Bearcats, falling 17-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-14.

What Happened
The Saints struggled to get going early, only able to rattle off more than two straight points once in the first set. The Bearcats took set one comfortably 25-17.

Set two was a much more even affair with both teams taking leads throughout the contest. Maryville strung together three runs to keep it close, but four service errors resulted in Southwest Baptist taking the second set 25-22.

In the third set,
Gretchen Moser's team got things going, collecting 16 kills and a match high .452 hitting percentage. Senior
Mikaela Kues led the way with six kills, followed by timely kills from sophomore
Taylor Keck and freshman
Ashlyn Clayton to push the Saints to a dominant 25-16 set victory.

After early success in set four, the Saints saw four serves sail long and could not recover from a negative hitting clip, resulting in the Bearcats claiming the fourth set and the match. Â

What's Next?
The women's volleyball team is back on the court Saturday, Sept. 25, to take on the No. 21 ranked Rockhurst University Hawks for a GLVC clash at Moloney Arena. First serve will be at 3 p.m. and all fans will be required to wear a face mask inside the Simon Athletic Center.
