Romeoville, Ill. - In its inaugural match, the Maryville University men's volleyball team battled at No. 9 Lewis University Tuesday evening in Romeoville, Ill., but dropped a 3-0 decision. Set scores were 25-13, 25-11, 25-12. 
Mason Mortimer led the Saints with five kills, four digs and had two service aces.
 
What Happened
The first point in Saints men's volleyball history came on a kill by 
Mason Mortimer. The Flyers took a 5-1 lead before Mortimer again notched a kill. Maryville recorded back-to-back points on a Lewis service error followed by a termination by 
Jacob Fischer to trim the deficit to 15-8. The Saints used a kill by 
Tate Sandvig and an ace by Mortimer to close to 18-12. However, the Saints only scored one more point the rest of the way.
 
Fischer had a block early in set two to get the Saints on the board. Maryville received a point after a Lewis miscue but the Flyers reeled off five straight points. Another Lewis error and a block by 
Cole Torrence and 
Cameron Chambers brought the Saints to 15-6 but the home side steadily pulled away.
 
The third set saw Fischer with a kill and a block to get the Saints to within 4-2. The Flyers went on a 7-0 burst until Maryville notched a point followed by an ace by Mortimer. 
Victor Ganev notched a kill to keep the Saints within single digits. Mortimer put down a kill to keep the margin 20-11 but the Saints never got any closer.
