Tom Becomes First to Tally Twice but Frostburg State Rallies to Edge Saints 3-2

Frostburg, Md. – Alison Tom fired in two goals for Maryville field hockey but host Frostburg State rallied to edge the Saints 3-2 Monday morning. Tom becomes the first Saints to score twice in a game this inaugural season.

The Saints earned a penalty corner in the sixth minute of play but Gwen Oudesluys' attempt was saved. Maryville kept control of the ball and Dane Thiart fed Tom for her first goal of the season at the 6:15 mark of the first. FSU nearly tied it but Liz Bierhals stopped a shot to keep the Saints ahead. Frostburg State put four more shots on goal in the second quarter but the Saints defense kept the hosts off the board for a 1-0 lead at the break.

On the sixth penalty corner in the third, FSU finally broke through the Maryville defense and tied the game at 1-1. Neither team could break the tie until FSU converted on a penalty stroke at the 54:44 mark for a 2-1 edge. FSU scored again less than two minutes later for a 3-1 lead. The Saints pressed forward and earned a penalty corner in the waning seconds. Tom converted the chance as Oudesluys fed her the ball to cut the gap to 3-2 in the waning seconds. However, the Saints did not have enough time for a late goal to force overtime. Bierhals recorded double-digit saves with 11 on the day.

Maryville is now 2-8 on the season, while Frostburg State ups its record to 7-4. The Saints start a three-game home stand Monday, Oct. 17, as Lander visits for a 4 p.m. start.
