St. Louis – The Maryville University field hockey team hosted Lander on a cold and blustery Monday afternoon but dropped a 5-0 decision. The Saints had more penalty corners than the Bearcats (9 to 5) and nearly matched the visitors in shots (13 to 16) but Lander converted its best scoring chances to earn the victory.
Â
In the second minute of play, Lander earned a penalty corner and grabbed the lead on Aniek Vreeken's goal. The Saints responded and took the five shots but had three turned away by Lander goalie Kelsey Gibbons.
Tia Sansone nearly pulled the Saints level in the second quarter but had back-to-back shots saved. After Lander's only shot of the quarter,
Lachlan Sanders put another attempt on frame but her shot was saved. The Bearcats took the one-goal lead into halftime.
Â
The third quarter proved pivotal as Lander pushed across two early goals after the break and tacked on a third late in the period. The Saints took two more shots in the fourth but were unable to cash in an attempt. Sansone had four shots on goal, while
Emma Gober had a pair of attempts on frame. Maryville keeper
Liz Bierhals came up with eight saves on the day, including stopping a penalty stroke attempt in the waning moments.
Â
Maryville now stand at 2-9 this season, while Lander improves to 3-4. The Saints continue their home stand as they host city foe Saint Louis University for a 4 p.m. clash Wednesday, Oct. 19.
