Catanzaro Gives Women’s Soccer a 1-0 Senior Day Win Over Missouri S&T

ST. LOUIS – Freshman Gina Catanzaro scored in the 77th minute for Maryville women's soccer to give them a 1-0 Senior Day victory over Missouri S&T on Sunday afternoon. The Saints remain unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at 6-0-5 and push their 2022 record to 8-2-5 overall.

Maryville found themselves in danger nearly 10 minutes into the game after fouling Andersyn Foster in the box for a penalty kick opportunity. Senior goalkeeper Katie Nash was up to the task, denying a low shot to her right to keep the Miners off the board.

Two minutes later, Ashley Haag sent another shot on net but Nash rejected the opportunity for her second save. The defense stifled the visiting offense for the remainder of the half, but the Miner defense did the same sending the match scoreless into halftime.

Much like Friday's comeback from two goals down, the Saints came out in the second half a different team. Lexi Gentry put a pair of shots on goal early in a second half that Maryville went on to dominate with three more shots on goal.

At 76:04, Gina Catanzaro broke a scoreless tie with her second goal of the season when she recovered a loose ball that hit off the goalkeeper and powered through for a goal on an empty net. The home defense did the rest, holding the Miners to no shots on goal for the remainder of the half to earn a 1-0 win on Senior Day.

The women's soccer team finishes off their regular season on the road at No. 12 McKendree University with playoff implications on the line. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Lebanon, Ill.
