Men's Volleyball Sees Five-Game Winning Streak End at Fontbonne

Clayton, Mo. – The Maryville men's volleyball team was looking for the season sweep of Fontbonne but the Griffins downed the Saints 3-1. The loss snapped Maryville's five-game winning streak as Fontbonne won 25-15, 25-18, 18-25, 25-21. For the second straight match against Fontbonne, Tate Sandvig finished with 17 kills and finished a double-double with 11 digs. Mason Mortimer added 10 kills, while Cameron Chambers handed out 40 assists.

The Griffins hit .500 in the opening set and the Saints had their lowest of the match as the home side took set one. The Saints picked up their attack percentage but Fontbonne only had two errors in the second set to extend its lead.
 
The Saints took a small lead in set three and were up 16-11. Fontbonne tied the set 19-19 but Maryville answered with three consecutive points. Sandvig started the run, and after a block by Torrence and Van Handel, a kill by Van Handel built a 22-19 edge. The teams traded points until Mason Mortimer ended the set 25-23.
 
The Saints turned the tables and had their highest hitting percentage at .280, while limiting Fontboone to just a .034 mark. After Fontbonne scored the first point of set three, the Saints reeled off four straight. Tate Sandvig had two kills and a block to key the early burst. Fontbonne got to within one but never tied the Saints. Up 14-12, the Saints scored five of the next six points, including four straight kills from four different players to take a 19-13 advantage. A Jacob Fischer kill ended the set at 25-18.
 
The fourth set featured eight ties and was close the entire way. Sandvig had a kill to knot the score at 9-9. Fontbonne edged ahead to 16-14 before scoring three straight. The Saints chipped away at their deficit and closed to 23-21 on a Griffins hitting error. However, Fontbonne scored the final two points to seal the win.
