ST. LOUIS – Maryville University defeated Missouri S&T on Wednesday afternoon, riding late-inning heroics from
Brad Willis and
Ben Prywitch to take a 7-6 victory in the 10
th inning.
Missouri S&T Recap
Both teams had the offenses going early, scoring two runs each in the first inning. Maryville starting pitcher
Jamie Young minimized the damage by stranding the bases loaded in the top half before RBIs from
Dominic Connolly and
Alex Hoff tied the game in the bottom half.
The Miners loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning, but only managed to score two.
Both starting pitchers settled in from there and kept the score frozen until the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on first and third, a wild pitch brought in Connolly from third to make it 4-3. Missouri S&T continued to pull away with one in the sixth and one in the seventh.
The Saints started the comeback bid with a run in the bottom of the seventh when Bunton singled home a run with the bases loaded. In the eighth, Maryville tied the game at six when
Elias Stevens singled in
Joey Polak, followed by a Willis RBI double to the left-center gap.
After a scoreless eighth inning, reliever
Ben Prywitch stifled the visiting bats once again in the top halves of the ninth and tenth inning, collecting five strikeouts over three innings of work.
A Polak single to left had the Saints in business with one out in the bottom of the 10
th inning. Stevens then stepped up and ripped a single past the third baseman to send pinch-runner
Nick Hofmann to third. Willis took his chance to be a hero and sent a ball deep enough into centerfield to bring the game-winning run home from third base with a sacrifice fly.
